Will Sheehey Commits to Indiana

Another commitment, another guard. That's how Tom Crean rolls these days.

Early Monday morning, Sagemont High (FL) head coach Adam Ross confirmed to Rivals.com that Will Sheehey, a 6-5, 190 pound guard out of Weston, Florida, has verbally committed to Indiana. He is the second commitment for the Hoosiers in the 2010 recruiting class, joining DeMartha Catholic guard (Washington D.C.) guard Victory Oladipo.

The Florida wing guard picked the Hoosiers over offers from George Washington, Northwestern and Stanford. He also received 'heavy' interest from Michigan and Georgia Tech.

Like many Indiana recruits in the past, the tradition factor played a huge role in Sheehey's recruitment, even though the recent success of the program has been dismal.

"After visiting Indiana and seeing the campus and Assembly Hall and the new practice facility, he was very excited about the potential of going there," Ross told Mike Pegram of Peegs.com. "He understands the history of Indiana basketball and that it is one of the flagship programs of college basketball. He believes Coach Crean is going to bring the program back where it belongs, which is the top of college basketball."

According to Rivals.com, Sheehey is the 138th overall prospect and 35th best shooting guard in the country. The popular recruiting service offers him a three-star rating.

Here is an evaluation on Sheehey from ESPN in July 2009.

"Sheehey has great size and plays with urgency on both ends of the floor. Defensively, he plays in a stance with active hands. He competes to keep the ball handler in front of him using the proper distance. Sheehey runs the floor well in transition and can hit the three-point shot consistently with time."

Sheehey will make it official and sign his letter of intent tomorrow.

IPFW Picks Up 2011 Big Man

While at Indiana, Dane Fife was known for his fearless play on the floor. As head coach of the IPFW men's basketball team, the former Hoosier standout brings the same mentally to his players.

Terrance Williams, a 6-11 center from Freeport, Illinois, will get a taste of Fife's coaching style next season, as the big man will transfer to IPFW from SIU-Edwardsville in 2o11. Williams is the first commitment in 2011 recruiting class for IPFW.

He will join IPFW after a one-year stint at SIU-Edwardsville, where he averaged 3.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg, and shot 55% from the field.

Before singing with Cougars, Williams received interest from a number of big name programs, such as Tennessee and Baylor.

Bob Knight Will Not Attend IU Hall of Fame Induction

Bob Knight says no thanks.

According to ESPN analyst and friend Dick Vitale via twitter, former Indiana head men's basketball coach Bob Knight will not attend the school's first ever athletic Hall of Fame introduction. The university and athletic department had planned to induct Knight, along with many other Hoosier greats, on November 7, 2009, during halftime of the Indiana vs. Wisconsin football game.

Despite the latest news, IU will still welcome back the likes of former men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley (1973-2004), Steve Downing (men's basketball, 1971-73), Katrin Koch (women's track and field, 1989-92), Joe Norman (football, 1975-78), the family of late Mike Rabold (football, 1956-58), and Alan Somers (swimming, 1961-63).

Purdue Gets Another 2012 Commit

Matt Painter isn't wasting anytime putting together his future roster. He will even go out of state to do so.

The Boilermakers received a verbal commitment last week from current Dublin (OH) Coffman sophomore Kyle Molock. Listed as a 6-3, 180 pound shooting guard, Molock picked Purdue over offers from Akron, Florida International, Ohio, and St. Joseph's.
Reportedly, he was drawing interest from Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

Molock joins Fort Wayne standout Rapheal Davis in the 2012 class for Purdue.

Weekly Tidbits: October 14

Welcome back tidbit fans. After a week off, we'll attempt to catch up to the past week's events , and also take a look to this weekend ahead.
We won't cover everything, but the stories I felt were most important.

Notre Dame's Big Weekend
-For Notre Dame football fans, this Saturday is a big day.

The second big
gest game this weekend (behind Texas vs. Oklahoma) will feature the #25 Fighting Irish against the #7 USC Trojans at Notre Dame Stadium. Saying this is a big game may even be an understatement, as Charlie Weis and the Irish are still looking for a signature win in the 2009 season. With a win Saturday over USC, Notre Dame won't only improve to 5-1 and springboard deeper into the top-25, they may also leave a good impression on 25 or more recruits that will be visiting for the game. These aren't just any recruits coming to South Bend on Saturday, these are many of the nation's top players, most of whom also hold USC offers. An electrifying atmosphere and exciting win this weekend could do wonders for the future of the program.

However, this statement has been made many times in the past (vs. USC, 2005), and a victory on Saturday is less likely than a possibility. As of today, Vegas has the odds set for a USC victory (-10).

Here is the list of the players visiting on Saturday from the 2010 class. As you will see, Charlie Weis and staff have put all their eggs into one basket. For their sake, hopefully they don't crack.

IU Hosts Top Prospect
Just a hunch, but I have a feeling To
m Crean loves recruiting just as much as coaching.

Crean and the IU coaching staff
hosted a familiar face a few weekends ago on an unofficial visit to campus. According to Mike Pegram of Peegs.com, Washington High School junior Cody Zeller, who holds an IU offer, was in Bloomington on the weekend of October 3, and most recently, this past weekend. On October 3, Zeller took a tour of campus, participated in a pickup game with the current Hoosier team, and watched the Indiana football team take on Ohio State. This past weekend, he participated in another pick up game, this time with Indiana commits Austin Etherington and Matt Carlino.

As Zeller's recruiting stock grows nationally, he continues to bring in big-time offers from top name programs, such as Purdue, North Carolina, Florida, Ohio State and North Dame. Along with IU, the 6-10 prospect has made visits to Notre Dame, Purdue, and Ohio State.

While it's way too
early in the recruiting process to pick a clear-cut favorite, it appears North Carolina is the leader, followed by Purdue and Indiana.

Although, it's likely a college decision from Zeller won't come until 2010, Crean will continue to sell Zeller on the importance of staying in-state and rebuilding a once prominent program.

Billion Dollar Man
A year ago, LeBron James said he wanted to become the first athlete to ever earn billion dollars. Unfortunately for the 'King,' he is a decade short and millions of dollars behind the first true billion athlete, Mr. Tiger Woods.

According to Forbes magazine, Woods topped the billion mark after winning the PGA Tour's season-long FexEx Cup, and its $10 million dollars winner's check two weekends ago. Add this prize money to his 2009 season winnings ($10.5 million dollars) to $980 million dollars in career earnings from endorsements and tour winnings, and you come to a billion dollars. Yes, with a 'B.'

While Tiger donates a lot of his fortune to charities, he can at least feel comfortable knowing his daughter's great-great grand kids are set for life.

John's Top-5 NFL Power Rankings
1. Colts: With a perfect 5-0 record, the baby horses are playing the best football of any team right now. Peyton Manning has to be the current MVP favorite.
2. Giants: Like the Colts, the Giants are on a roll, thanks to a top-3 defense and a MVP-caliber season so far from Eli Manning.
3. Saints: The best show on Turf-II? The offense receives all the credit, but it's the defense that's keeping the Saints in games.
4. Minnesota: Love him or hate him, Brett Favre has taken this team to the next level.
5. Falcons: Balance, Balance, Balance. On offense, the Falcons can beat you so many ways, while the defense doesn't give up the big play.

Ramblings:
-Attention Indiana basketball fans, Hoosier Hysteria aka "Midnight Madness" is this Friday, October 16 at 7:00 p.m. Assembly Hall should be rocking.

-Who Dey. How about the Cincinnati Bengals? Like millions, or even billions of others, I wrote this 4-1 team off before the season began. At the time, I believed they had a solid group of young, talented players, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Many of those young players, though, were inexperienced and the franchise wasn't coming off the best of seasons. I did, however, think Cedric Benson still had gas left in the tank, but not enough to lead the NFL in rushing after five weeks. The Bengals currently sit alone atop the NFC North, with three wins over division opponents. Time will tell if they are the real deal.

-The Oakland Raiders are horrible. There is no other way to say it.... They can't run. They can't pass. They can't stop the run. And, you guess it, they can't stop the pass. ESPN thinks St. Louis is the worst team heading into Week 6.

-According to ESPN, Brady Quinn has put his house up for sale in Cleveland. This could mean two things.... The Browns are going to trade him, or he is fed up with his neighbor. I'll take the former.

- Funny Clip: Indiana vs Virginia video. I received this from a good friend, who seems to have a good sense of humor.

-Last clip of the day... This has to be a horrible way to lose a football game. Remember kids, play until the whistle.

September 28, 2009: Weekly Tidbits

Welcome back tidbit fans to another week of recapping the top sports news and stories told by your boy. In this edition, we will look at a number of different sporting events that topped the headlines from September 19-27. Unless you were out of town or fell asleep early, you missed two semi-local college football games that came down to the wire. We'll recap those match ups, and much more. Enjoy!

Michigan 36, Indiana 33

Despite a breakout game from Indiana freshman Darius Willis, the Michigan Wolverines escape with a 36-33 victory over the Hoosiers, Saturday afternoon in the Big House. The Wolverines (4-0, 1-0) stay unbeaten this season, while the Hoosiers (3-1, 0-1) suffer their first loss in 2009.

Down 33-29, the Michigan offense drove the length of the field in the game's final minutes, ending the drive in a 26 yard pass play from Tate Forcier to Martavious Odoms, giving the home team the lead.

IU had one last chance to steal the victory on the game's final drive, but Hoosier quarterback Ben Chappell was picked off by Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren, ending the game at 36-33.

Michigan was led to victory by Carlos Brown, who finished Saturday's contest with 86 yards on 11 carries, and two touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving). Tate Forcier had another fine day for Michigan, going 11-23 for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

In the loss, Willis, a redshirt freshman, had a career day on the ground for the Hoosiers, rushing for 162 yards on 16 carries and two touchdowns. Chappell also played well on Saturday, going 21 of 38 for 270 yards.

Next up: Michigan (at Michigan State, 12:00 PM- Big Ten Network); Indiana (vs. Ohio State, 7:00 PM- Big Ten Network)

Notre Dame 24, Purdue 21
Instead of writing my own recap, I have linked a few post-game stories from the South Bend Tribune and Journal and Courier. I felt these story explained the game very well from each fanbase's perspective.

Eric Hansen, South Bend Tribune: "Irish Clear Big Hurdle-Barely"
Mike Carmin, Journal and Courier: "Notre Dame Eludes Purdue's Grasp"

Next up: Norte Dame (vs. Washington, 3:30 PM- NBC); Purdue (vs. Northwestern, 12:00 PM- Big Ten Network)

Purdue Basketball Recruiting
Since taking over the reigns in West Lafayette, Purdue head coach Matt Painter and his staff have made a vibrant effort to recruit the state of Indiana. And if this year's roster isn't an example of that, nothing will be. However, this doesn't mean Painter won't travel outside state borders for a talented prospect, who he thinks can help the program evolve. In the case of Chicago-area Alex Foster, the Purdue head coach must believe this freshman in high school is the real deal.

In a column written by Chicagohoops.com, the Boilermakers, along with many other top programs from around the country, such as Illinois and Ohio State, are lining up at the door for Foster, a  6-7 power forward. While the line may be getting longer each month, Foster is worth the wait, as many recruiting services have already tabbed the De La Salle prospect as the top player in the 2013 class. Although it will be a while before we learn of Foster's college choice--possibly two to three years even-- coach Painter is off to a quick start with one of the top prep players in the country.

Who are the AP Poll voters?

Bernard Pollard Signs with Texans
A month ago, the Kansas City Chiefs released safety Bernard Pollard, who was the team's second round draft pick back in 2006. While the cut was unexpected, it was only a matter of time before Pollard ended up with another franchise. Three weeks later, the former South Side and Purdue standout signed a deal with the Houston Texans. Pollard, a strong safety, will begin his career in Houston as a backup.

Worst College Football Team in America
And the winner is.....

Searching around SI.com the other day led me to this article. The title of the headline is sad, but very true: Indiana State is the worst Division-I program in the country.

Pirates and Attendance

Is there something wrong with this picture......

The Fort Wayne Tincaps average seating attendance for the 2009 season was 5,319. Not bad for a single-A minor league team. A major league team couldn't possibly draw below that number, right?

Well, it happened on September 24, when the Pittsburgh Pirates hosted the Cincinnati Reds. Although 15,000 seats were sold before the game, only 3,000 people walked through the gates, according told by PNC park officials. The officials explained the low attendance was due to the  "G-20 Summit". This reason could be true, but I have two more to add: The Pirates are in last place in the N.L. Central Division, and it's football season in Pittsburgh.

College Football Hall of Fame Will Leave South Bend
On December 31, 2010, the College Football Hall of Fame will shut its doors in South Bend, Indiana, and relocate to Atlanta, Georgia, according to Hall officials on September 25. Officials expect to draw more visitors and foot traffic through the museum, leading to bigger and better exhibits and, of course, the most important aspect, larger profit gains. A new building will be constructed alongside Centennial Olympic Park in downtown Atlanta and is expected to open in 2012.

Tidbits: September 22

I should receive a delay of game penalty for delivering these tidbits late.

In this week's edition, we will discuss and dissect the important events from last week, and answer the tough questions surrounding the college gridiron and beyond. Such as.....

What's up in South Bend? Is Michigan for real? Can the Hoosiers steal a win next week against the Wolverines? Was Washington's victory over USC legit?

Let's find out...

1. Notre Dame escapes Michigan State

Fresh off a loss to the Michigan Wolverines in the Big House a week ago, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish looked to put aside the heart-crushing defeat, and move on against the struggling Michigan State Spartans in South Bend. Although the game favored the Irish early, the Spartans, once again, and played well in their 'second home.'

Down 13-3 after the first quarter, Michigan State found a way to move the ball effectively against the Irish defense, leading to two touchdowns before halftime. Notre Dame added a field goal before the break, but Sparty led the Irish 17-16 at intermission.

Down a point, and needing a quick score, Jimmy Clausen and the Irish offense drove the length of the field on the first drive in the third quarter, ending with an Armando Allen touchdown pass to Robby Parris. Allen set up in the 'Wildcat' formation, faked a draw up the middle, and found an open Parris in the back of the endzone. The fireworks didn't end there.

Michigan State fired back with two more touchdowns in the second half, giving the visitors a 30-26 lead with under five minutes left in regulation. It was put up or shut up at this point for the Irish.

The echos rang load and clear on Notre Dame's last offensive position of the game, as Clausen connected with Golden Tate for a 33-yard touchdown pass. All Notre Dame had to do now was stop the Spartans inexperienced offense, which for some reason, was no easy task on this day.

Under three minutes left, the Spartans attacked the Irish's secondary, and quickly moved the ball down the field, setting up for another potential upset at Notre Dame Stadium. When the Irish needed a stop, the defense one-upped its goal with an interception, as Kyle McCarthy saved the day after picking off a pass from a hurried Spartan quarterback Kirk Cousins, ending the game at 33-30.

While the old saying goes 'a win is a win,' Notre Dame's victory over Michigan State came at a cost, both on the injury list and among Irish fans.

Sophomore wide out Michael Floyd will miss the rest of the season after suffering a collar bone injury in the second quarter. Further, before the game, the Irish were picked as the clear-cut favorite to win, but the home team didn't play like the best squad on this day.

Until Notre Dame can stop the run and put pressure on the opposing team's quarterback, it's going to be a rough journey the rest of the season. Despite the recent loss of Michael Floyd for the entire season, the Irish offense, as a whole, is fine, with Clausen, Tate, and Allen running the show. However, Notre Dame won't be able to outscore every opponent, most notably USC in a few weeks. A new defensive game plan must be a priority, or else Weis will be out as coach at season's end.

2. Michigan is on a roll, but for how long?

The Michigan Wolverines showed the country they're on their way back to national prominence last weekend after beating Notre Dame in Ann Arbor, 38-34. Could the Rich Rodriguez's squad continue the momentum against Eastern Michigan this past weekend? Take a guess, and you would be right.

The Blue and Maize put on another fine showing, especially in the second half, in defeating the Eagles, 45-17. Although Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier had a good day under center, he wasn't the main man in the win. That title belonged to running back Carlos Brown, who rushed for 187 yards on 13 carries, and two touchdowns.

Brown's coming out party couldn't come at a better time for Michigan, as they begin Big Ten play next Saturday at home against Indiana. If the Wolverines want to build on their ongoing successful season, they must continue to make big plays and put the pressure on opposing quarterbacks. In my crystal ball, I see the Wolverines winning their next four games, until they travel to Happy Valley to take on Penn State. Not only are the Nittany Lions a strong opponent, but Happy Valley is an extremely tough place to play.

Until then, you have to be impressed with what Rodriguez is doing with this young team. With more wins, comes more confidence. This could be a scary thing for Michigan opponents down the road.....

3. Indiana zips by Akron; Bring on Michigan

In the first two games this season, Indiana has struggled to put teams away with the victory in hand. Although the Hoosiers won these games, the two wins, mind you, came against Division II program Eastern Kentucky (19-13) and MAC-opponent Western Michigan (23-19).

On Saturday, however, the Hoosiers came out with an extra fire in their pads, having little trouble defeating Akron, a top-tier MAC team, 38-21. The Hoosiers are now 3-0, heading into next's week game against Michigan at the Big House. The real test begins next week.

Leading the Hoosiers to victory was the running back corps made up of Darius Willis (15 carries, 66 yards, a touchdown), Trea Burgess (13 carries, 59 yards, a touchdown) and Demetrius McCray (12 carries, 45 yards). As a unit, the grouped averaged 3.9 yards a carry. Starting quarterback Ben Chappell had a good day, as well, throwing for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and only one interception.

At 3-0, IU sits atop the big ten standings. As mentioned, the Hoosiers' first real test will come against a tricky, option-friendly Michigan squad. Indiana will be the underdog, and they can upset Michigan if they slow down the Wolverines' rushing attacking. The problem, though, no one has been able to slow down Michigan, yet.

Although I don't see an IU win next weekend, anything can happen. Just ask USC.

4. SAC Power Poll

John's SAC Power Poll (after Week 4)

3. South Side

10. Northrop

Player of the Week: Snider running back Jason McCraw ran 18 times for 242 yards and two scores against Concordia.

5. Irving Drops Indiana from Recruitment

Indiana Hoosiers #1 recruiting target Kyrie Irving announced last week that he will no longer consider the Hoosiers in his ongoing recruitment this fall. Talks between Irving and the Indiana coaching staff turned south following an in-home visit a week ago. For more information on this story, click the link below.

Story written by Mike Pegram of Peegs.com on September 18, 2009.

6. We're Back...

Miami, BYU, Florida State, and Michigan. After lack luster seasons the past couple of years, it's nice to see these former college football powerhouse programs back in the national spotlight. The biggest surprise has to be Michigan, who began the 2009 season unranked, but now #23 in the polls and owns a 3-0 record, with wins over Western Michigan, Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan. Miami has also been impressive in wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech.

7. Ramblings

-Running back Jahvid Best of California is the Heisman favorite right now. Did you see his five touchdowns against Minnesota? Whether he ran north-south or around the edges, Best is a dominating force right now.

-On occasion, I like to look at my past predictions, and figure out where I went wrong with them. My biggest flop so far this year was calling Alabama overrated. True, it may be too early to call this pick a flop, but they have played extremely well up to this point. Bama is ranked #3 in the country this week.

-Call me 'Mr. Obvious,' but it appears Boise State will go undefeated, and have a shot at playing for the National Championship this season.

-Not to take anything away from Washington, who played flawless defensive football on Saturday against USC, but their win over the Trojans was a fluke.

-With Indiana off Irving's list, look for the Hoosiers to make a push for 6-9 power forward Brandon Mobley.

-Until further notice, Kentucky is still the favorite to win the NCAA Title in 2009-2010.

College Odds and Picks: Week 3

It's time again to check out the current odds from Vegas for tomorrow's college football games. I have a feeling an upset or two are in store.....

Remember, picking against the spread isn't the same thing as choosing the winner of the game. For example, as you will see below, I have Toledo in bold against Ohio Sate. This doesn't mean I think the Rockets will take down 'the Ohio State,' I just don't think Ohio State will win by 21 points.
Feel free to make your own selections in the comment section below.

At this moment...

Northern Illinois
Purdue -12.5

Midweek Tidbit: Sept. 15

Recruiting Updates

Recruiting in college athletics is a 24 hour, seven day a week, grueling job. Make sure to remind Kelvin Sampson that there are restrictions, though.

It has been said most coaches spend twice as much time recruiting than they do working with their own team. And there is good reason for that: if a coach recruits well, his job becomes easier on the field with the talent he has brought to campus.

We talk about recruiting a lot on this site because it's important in college sports. And if you're like me, you find it interesting.

I enjoy mostly the adventure a recruit takes during his evaluating process. What schools does he like? Where is he going to visit? Why is he going to visit a certain school? And lastly, what school fits him the best?

Let's discuss a few recruiting stories that made news last week.

Notre Dame Football

Two days after visiting South Bend for the Nevada game, Cameron Roberson, a 6-1, 215 pound running back out of Newbury Park, California, ended his recruitment last Sunday evening, and committed to the Irish. He chose Notre Dame over offers from BYU, Northwestern, Utah, Washington, and Arizona.

Rivals.com gives the new Irish commit a four-star rating, while Scout.com offers a three-star mark.  Rivals.com also ranks Roberson as the 19th best running back in the country, and the 220th top overall prospect. The Newbury product will convert to fullback next season at Notre Dame.

Purdue Basketball

Despite the lack of scholarships the next two seasons, head coach Matt Painter is still a busy man on the recruiting front. The Boilermaker head coach recently offered a prospect many recruiting gurus may have known at one time, but have forgotten over the years.

Indianapolis Park Tutor point guard Kevin Ferrell, also nicknamed 'Yogi,' now a junior, recently picked up an offer from Purdue, after showcasing his talents at the Boilermaker Elite Camp held in West Lafeyette. He also holds offers from Ohio State and Butler. As a sophomore, Ferrell averaged 12.3 points, 5.1 assists and two steals. He also shot 36 percent from three-point range.

Ferrell is no stranger the big stage, as he was once dubbed as the 'Top Fourth Grader' in the country by recruiting analysts years ago. He will visit Purdue sometime this summer.

Indiana Basketball

Duke and Kentucky had their chances, now it's Indiana's turn.

Tom Crean and staff spent Sunday evening in Elizabeth, New Jersey, making an in-home visit with prize recruit Kyrie Irving. The meeting, as told by Irving, was an "overall good visit."  In the past few weeks, the talk surrounding Indiana's number one target has not been good news to Hoosier fans. It has been reported that Duke is now the solid leader, although Irving has said on many occasions that all the teams involved in his recruitment are "balanced." As more time passes, it appears the Blue Devils may land this talented floor leader.

Fun Fact of the Day: New York Yankees slugger and possible future Hall of Famer, Alex Rodriguez, has hit many home runs in his professional career. Where did he hit his first dinger as a pro? The answer, against the Fort Wayne Wizards back in 1994 at the now crumbled Memorial Stadium.

Monday's Tidbits: Sept. 7

Welcome back earthlings to another edition of this week's tidbits. Since today is Labor Day, the tidbits will be short and sweet, but as always, will leave you satisfied. I have been sent a few links many of you will enjoy, featuring the "50 Greatest Hits in College Football history." Speaking of College Football, we'll recap the biggest game from the weekend, and provide the odds for next week's Notre Dame-Michigan contest.

1. Indiana Lands Second 2010 Commit
Guards are flying in from the heavens and landing in Bloomington.

According to Peegs.com, DeMatha (MD) shooting guard Victor Oladipo has committed to Tom Crean and the Hoosiers. Oladipo made his pledge to the Cream and Crimson after visiting campus on an official visit Saturday afternoon. He joins David Williams as the two commitments in the 2010 class for the Hoosiers.

Oladipo, a 6-4, 180 pounds shooting guard out of Hyattsville, Maryland, picked Indiana over offers from Notre Dame, Marquette and Xavier. He is ranked as the 133rd overall prospect in the 2010 class and is listed as a three star, according to Rivals.com.

To get a taste of Oladipo, check both of these videos. He's extremely long and athletic. Needs to work on his consistency.

2. ND, Michigan, Purdue win big

The Irish, Wolverines, and Boilermakers all had questions coming into their respective games this past weekend. How will Purdue look in Danny Hope's first game? Can Michigan take a step forward with freshman Tate Forcier at quarterback? Has Notre Dame's young five-star talent finally grown up? Let's answer each of these questions.

Purdue 52,  Toledo 31

It wasn't perfect, but the Boilers got the job done. Led by senior quarterback Joey Elliott's three touchdowns, the Purdue Boilermakers cruised to victory over MAC opponent Toledo, 52-31. Despite three interceptions, Elliott, for the the most part, played better than expected in the season opener. A few throws made you scratch your head, but that's expected early in the season. Coach Hope should be happy with his quarterback's performance, but he should be a little concerned with the defensive effort. Nothing against Toledo, but a mid-level MAC team should never score 31 points against a Big Ten team. Still, there's room and time for improvement, and I give coach Hope a passing grade in his first game as head coach.

Michigan 31, Western Michigan 7

Behind freshman quarterback Tate Forcier and a stellar defensive performance, the Michigan Wolverines rolled over Western Michigan, 31-7 at the Big House on Saturday afternoon. While this should have been chalked in as a win before kickoff, Michigan fans were all curious and anxious to see how their new quarterback would perform in his first game in the Maize and Blue. If the score wasn't an indicator, the statsheet painted the picture. Forcier went 13-20 for 179 yards through the air and rushed for 37 yards on 10 carries, running Rich Rodriguez's spread offense. Although Western Michigan wasn't a tough a opponent, Michigan fans should be excited for the future. The real test comes next week as the Irish come to town.

Notre Dame 35, Nevada 0

Are the Irish back? Not yet, but they are getting closer. The Irish had no trouble defeating the Nevada Wolfpack 35-0, thanks to another fine performance from quarterback Jimmy Clausen, who went 15-18 for 315 yards and four touchdowns. Over the last two games, Clausen has thrown more touchdown passes, nine, than incompletions, seven. Pretty impressive. Future All-American wide receiver Michael Floyd had 4 receptions for 189 yards and three touchdowns. While watching the game, it's clear the Irish have developed as a unit over the past two seasons. The talented recruiting classes have grown up, and now, they are showing their potential. Like Michigan, the true test comes next week as the Irish look for a victory in the Big House.

3. Biggest Hits in College Football History

Like big hits? Click this link, and you will see the top bone-crushing tackles from over the years. Personally, #2 on the list is ridiculous.

3. Is the Big Ten done forever?

The Wall Street Journal recently ran a story discussing the main reason why the Big Ten has been considered 'down' over the years. Can you guess what it is? Read this article and you will find out. The answer may surprise you. Thank you Grandpa Felts for providing this interesting story.

P.S.: Ever notice the number '11'  embedded in the Big Ten logo?

4. Oregon's Blount suspended for the season

In case you missed it, Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount has been suspended for the entire 2009 season after punching Boise State backup defensive lineman Byron Hout following last Thursday's game. Here's the video link.

This was a crazy scene that should not have ever happened. Personally, I think Blount's suspension is a little steep, since he didn't start the altercation and who knows what Hout said in the aftermath. However, Oregon is sending a message: 'We don't act like this here.' Four games would've fit the crime, in my opinion. Hout should be suspended, too, for unsportsmanlike-conduct and for acting like a fool in victory.

6. NFL Super Bowl Predictions

College football had their moment in the sun, now it's the NFL's turn. This Sunday marks opening day for the 2009 NFL season, and if you are like me, I'm on pins and needles. So many story lines and questions await, such as, who are the teams to beat? Listed below are the favorites to win the Super Bowl from around the media.

Sports Illustrated: New England over Chicago
Sporting News: New York Giants over New England
ESPN: New England over New York Giants
John: New England over Philadelphia

NFL Rumblings...

-Colts safety Bob Sanders is expected to return from injury in five weeks.

-Rookie quarterback Matt Stafford has been tabbed as the Lions starter for opening day.

-It appears Brady Quinn will be named Cleveland's starting quarterback for week 1. Wouldn't be surprised if Derek Anderson wins the spot, either.

Short and sweet. Have a good one.

Monday's Tidbits: August 31

Welcome back fans to the site you call home, at least on Monday mornings and afternoons. In this week's edition of the tidbits, we'll discuss a number of issues that topped the headlines this weekend, as well as offer a few of strategies for the fantasy football managers out there. The tidbits below will inform you on the events that occurred this past week, and answer a few questions that appeared from the weekend.

Is the Michigan football program in trouble? Who attended the Indiana Elite basketball camp this past weekend? Matt Barkley has been named the starter out in L.A., did the 'Aaron Corp Era' end, before it even started?

While you're visiting the site, please take the time to vote in our poll on the right side of the screen. A new  question will be posted each week for your enjoyment. Here we go...

1. IU Elite Camp

School starts today for students at IU, but for Tom Crean, classes in Basketball 101 have already begun.

Crean and his staff, along with current and former Indiana players, such as Eric Gordon and Jared Jeffries, hosted over two dozen recruits this weekend as part of the annual Indiana Elite camp. The camp is for high school basketball players from all over the country to come to Bloomington for a weekend, and learn new skills from a handful of top-notch teachers. The camp took place at Assembly Hall, and was not open to the general public or media. While it is unknown on who all exactly attended the camp, information from inside sources zeroed in on who made it to Bloomington and who didn't. Here are a few key names that participated this weekend.

2010- Matt Carlino, Austin Etherington

2011-
Jeremiah Davis

2012-
Jeremy Hollowell, Kellon Thomas, JP Tokoto, Royal Edwards, Tyler Corley, TJ Bell

2013 - Daryl Baker, Collin Hartman, Daryl Hicks, Dwayne Wilson, Bryson and Brenton Scott (Northrop)

Recruiting update:

Kyrie Irving, the 6-2, shooting guard out of St. Patrick High School in New Jersey, will take one of his five official visits to Bloomington on October 3. This comes as no surprise to Hoosier fans, as Irving has gone on record to saying Indiana would receive one of his visits, but now an official date has been set. Duke will get the first visit on September 25, then Indiana will get its turn. The remaining three visits have yet to be determined, but it's likely Kentucky will grab one of them.

2. Final Week of Vegas Odds: College Football

Since the next edition of the tidbits will not be available until next Monday, listed below are the early week odds from Vegas on a few key match-ups for this weekend. In bold are the teams I say you take, if you're a betting man or woman.

Navy
Ohio State -22

Western Michigan
Michigan -11.5

Nevada
Notre Dame -14

Georgia
Oklahoma State -4

Missouri
Illinois -7

Toledo
Purdue -11

Miami
Florida State -5.5

Virginia Tech
Alabama -7

3. Michigan Football Program in Trouble

Or are they? In case you missed it, a report surfaced from the Detroit Free Press stating that a handful of current and former Michigan players allege current Wolverines coach Rich Rodriguez forced his players to extra practice time during the summer months, which is forbidden by the NCAA. Teams are permitted to no more than 20 hours of practice time during the week, but supposedly Rodriguez explained to his team that playing time would be determined on how much 'extra' time they spent in the weight room and on the practice field. One of the antonymous current players told the Free Press that some practices would last up 12 hours. While these allegations are just that, the NCAA just announced that a formal investigation will take place as soon as possible. We'll keep you updated on the NCAA's findings.

4. Barkley Named the Starter, is Corp Gone?

As reported on this site a few days ago, USC head coach Pete Carroll has picked freshman Matt Barkley as the starting quarterback for opening day against San Jose State. Barkley beat out sophomore Aaron Corp and junior Mitch Mustain for the starter's spot.

Although Barkley may be a good choice for the future of the program, many wonder what will happen to Corp, now the team's backup. Early reports out of Los Angeles say Corp will transfer to another school, most notably Colorado. Other reports say Boise State, where he has a few friends on the current roster.

These transfer rumors may be true, but at this point, Corp doesn't have many options. Since he participated in USC's offseason mini camp, he would still have to sit out a year, and would not be able to join another team's roster this season, even as a clipboard holder. My guess is Corp stays in L.A. and tries to win over the job, if or when Barkley struggles.

5. MLB MVP Leaders

While football is on the minds of many sports fans in this country, major league baseball is still going strong. With just over a month left in the season, it's about that time to start discussing the MVP race from both leagues. As stated many times on this site, I'm no baseball expert (I consider basketball my strong suit), but I have noticed a few trends in MVP voting over the years. One noticable trend that is different from the NFL and NBA is the team's success does not have an effect on the race. Albert Pujols won the award last season from the National League, but the St. Louis Cardinals did not make the playoffs. In the other two leagues, Pujols probably wouldn't have won the award, despite a great 2008 season. Below is a list of two players from each league, who have the best chance at winning the coveted award. In bold are my winners.

NL

Albert Pujols: 41 HR (1st), 110 RBI (3rd), .320 BA (5th)
Hanny Ramirez 19 HR (27th), 85 RBI (10th), .359 BA (1st)

AL

Joe Mauer: 25 HR (11th), 79 RBI (13th),.367 BA (1st)
Mark Texeria: 32 HR (2nd), 101 RBI (1st), .284 BA (37th)

7. Fantasy Advice

As a fantasy commissioner the past six years, I have seen it all when it comes to drafting players. Many managers like to take a quarterback with their first pick, or even a stud wide receiver. Both strategies are fine, and have worked in the past. If you follow these four tips, however, you may find yourself in the winner's circle in your league this winter.

1. Get a stud running back early.

There are many to choose from, but there are only a dime a dozen. If you are slotted in the first six picks, get one of the quality backs. You will be sorry if you don't.

Can't miss: Maurie Jones-Drew

Sleeper:
Donald Brown

Stay away: Joseph Addai

2. If the running backs are gone, find your quarterback.

Many leagues are set up to favor the running back and wide receiver positions, but a lot of these players tend to get hurt throughout the season. Quarterbacks get hurt, too, (thanks Tom Brady for ruining my season last year), but the top name QBs do not go down as often. Find a star QB early if the top RBs are gone.

Can't miss: Tom Brady

Sleeper:
Drew Brees

Stay Away:
Brett Favre

3. Wait on defensive players and kickers.

Don't be that guy who drafts a defensive linemen or kicker in round four. Sadly, I've seen it done, and the result did not end well for that manager. So, if your league has three spots for these players, wait until the final three picks to draft these guys. You'll thank me later.

Can't miss: DeMarcus Ware

Sleeper:
Aaron Curry

Stay away: Charles Tillman

4. Tight Ends make catches, too.

I've been astonished over the years on how many people wait until the very last minute to select a tight end. Do they forget these guys make big yard catches and receive touchdown passes? Find a TE whose team  has a young quarterback, likes to throw often, and has little depth at wide receiver. Tight Ends have won match-ups for managers late in the week.

Can't miss: Tony Gonzalez

Sleeper:
Greg Olsen

Stay away: Alge Crumpler

Thanks for reading. Good luck with your drafts fantasy owners. Until next week, I'm out!

Barkley named Trojans starting QB

USC has produced many talented quarterbacks over the years, many who are still playing in the NFL. If this trend continues, the next great Trojan signal caller will start his first game against San Jose State in a few weeks.

Matt Barkley, the consensus #1 overall recruit in the 2009 class, has been tabbed as the USC starting quarterback for opening day. Trojan head coach Pete Carroll announced the news following the team's afternoon practice. He slotted Barkley the starter over sophomore Aaron Corp and junior Mitch Mustian.

In this quarterback race, Carroll had a win-win-win situation. Despite each not having much or any NCAA Division I playing experience, any of the three would have likely succeeded under center this season with 10 starters returning on offense.

Barkley, however, won the job outright by throwing crisp, clean passes during training camp, while an injured Corp watched from the sidelines.

Here is some information on Barkley from his personal website, www.MattBarkley.com...

Barkley was named 2007 Gatorade national player of the year, as the first non-senior to ever been named such. He also won the 2007 Glenn Davis Award, given to best high school football player in Southern California , as well as the inaugural Joe Montana Award as the nation's top high school quarterback.
Matt Barkley passed for 3,576 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2007, completing 63% of his passes with nine interceptions. In 2005, he became the first freshman quarterback to start at Mater Dei High School since Todd Marinovich.
Matt Barkley is rated the top overall prospect in the nation by Rivals.com. On January 23, 2008, Barkley ended all speculation about Norm Chow and UCLA possibly becoming a contender by making his announcement for the USC Trojans.
Matt Barkley had a memorable 2007 junior season, when he was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year and won the Pete Maxwell Award for the top prep football player nationally. Matt Barkley threw for 3,560 yards and 35 touchdown passes in helping lead Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei to a share of the Trinity League title.

Monday's Tidbits: August 24

Welcome back friends to another edition of this week's tidbits. Although football season doesn't officially kickoff for another week, the stories that dominated the headlines this past week were pigskin related. I'm sure you are fine with that. We'll also discuss Bob Knight finally being inducted in the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame, as well as provide the new Rivals.com updated rankings for the class of 2011. Let's do 'dis.

1. Bobby is Back

On September 11, 2000, Bob Knight said goodbye to Indiana fans after being fired as head coach of the Hoosiers for 29 years. On November 7, 2009, he may say hello once again.

Former Indiana Hoosiers coaching great Bob Montgomery Knight has been inducted into the Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame, according to Indiana Athletic Director Fred Glass in a press release distributed to the media last Friday. Knight, along with former Indiana head men's soccer coach Jerry Yeagley, and a handful of other past great Indiana athletes, will officially be enshrined in front of an expected sold out crowd for the Indiana vs. Wisconsin football game on November 7, 2009.

While this is a great honor for all involved, one important question remains.....will Knight attend the ceremony? Early speculation suggests he will not, due to the remaining animosity he holds to the athletic department that ran him out of Bloomington almost a decade ago. Indiana fans, however, suggest most of that administration, most notably former Indiana President Myles Brand, is no longer associated with the school. Reportedly, only six people from that administration still work for the athletics department.

Although many Knight loyalists and Indiana fans are calling for his appearance, at the moment, I have a weird feeling coach Knight will not attend. Bad blood still runs thick, and it make take a strong personality, i.e. Tom Crean, to convince the one time Hoosier coach, to come back to Bloomington. I hope I am wrong, but Knight has been silent on this matter since the story broke.

Could he be setting the plot for a surprise entrance?

Indiana fans can only hope this story ends well.

2. New 2011 Rivals Rankings

The most interactive recruiting service on the web, Rivals.com, recently released an updated version of its high school basketball rankings for the 2011 class. And to no one's surprise, many Hoosier names appear from top to bottom. In fact, nine players from the state of Indiana made the list. For a state as small as Indiana, this is extremely impressive and shows that the Hoosier state still remains a hotbed for basketball talent. Take a look at the list of players and let's see where they might end up in two years....

Indiana High School Players on the 2011 List

2. Marquis Teague, Indianapolis Pike-Considering: Louisville, Kentucky, Indiana video
10. Michael Chandler, Indianapolis Lawrence North: Committed to Louisville
16. Brandon Dawson, Gary Lew Wallace: Considering Purdue, Indiana, UCLA, Georgetown
35. Cody Zeller, Washington: Considering Indiana, Purdue, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Butler
40. Jeremiah Davis, Muncie Central: Considering Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee
41. Marshall Plumlee, Warsaw (Arden, N.C.): Considering Duke, Purdue, Indiana, Florida
49: Ryan Taylor, Indianapolis Lawrence North: Committed to Louisville
68: Darwin Davis, Bloomington South: Committed to Xavier
86: Austin Etherington, Hamilton Heights: Committed to Indiana

3. AP and Coaches College Football Polls

The coaches made their voices known two weeks ago with their respective poll. Now, the media gave their opinion. After months of anticipation , the Associated Press of America released its 2009 preseason poll last week, tabbing Florida as the overwhelming favorite to repeat as National Champions. Although the two polls look very similar at first, there are some noticeable differences. Let's take a peak.

4. Indiana Basketball Recruiting Update

The topic line should read the 'Kyrie Irving saga.'

As we have mentioned on this site many times before, Irving has been the number 1 prospect on the Hoosiers' recruiting board the last eight months. While he has said many times that a decision won't be made until this fall, we now know the list of schools he will choose from. Irving provided this list to Zagsblog.

"The six schools are Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Seton Hall, UConn, and Texas A&M.”

Irving on Indiana...

"I have a great relationship with all the coaches, the whole coaching staff starting with Coach [Tom] Crean and it just trickles down to the assistant coaches. To Coach [Tim] Buckley and coach [Roshown] McLeod, I have great relationships with them."

Rivals.com ranks Irving as the 9th overall top prospect in the country for the 2011 class.

CONCORDIA 28, NORTH SIDE 6
SNIDER 27, BISHOP LUERS 13
HARDING 26, WAYNE 21

Player of the Week:
Harding running back Roderick Smith rushed for 298 yards on 28 carries, and two touchdowns, to lead the Hawks to a 26-21 win over the Wayne Generals.

Ramblings:

-Michigan head football coach Rich Rodriguez recently said he plans to use three quarterbacks in the season opener next week against Western Michigan. The three QBs for the Wolverines this season are Tate Forcier, Denard Robinson and Nick Sheridan. Forcier should win the starting job outright by week 2.

-Lou Holtz is at it again. The former Notre Dame legendary head coach recently said in an interview on ESPN that he believes the Irish will take on Florida for the 2009 National Championship. Most know I'm a big Notre Dame fan, and I do enjoy watching Holtz's personality on air. However, this prediction is borderline insane. If he's somehow right in a few months, I will quit writing the tidbits each week. I still believe the Irish can go 10-2.

-Former Duke point guard Greg Paulus has been named the starting quarterback for the Syracuse Orange. Either Paulus still has a cannon from his high school days, or the Orange program is desperate.

-Finally, Brett Favre made his Minnesota Vikings debut last Friday evening against the Kansas City Chiefs. While the future hall of famer finished the game with a sub par stat sheet, going 1-4, 4 yards, in two series, he looked comfortable running the West Coast offense he was so accustomed to in Green Bay. Look for a better showing from Favre against the Texans on August 31.

-Former Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

-While I may get into trouble for this saying this, since I am one of them....Cubs fans, maybe next year.

Thanks for reading sports nuts!

Monday's Tidbits: Aug. 17

Hello again, ladies and gents. I hope you enjoyed your cup of coffee or juice this morning. I know I did.

For this week's tidbits, we'll discuss everything from the latest in IU and PU recruiting to the Michael Vick finally signing with a team saga. Sit back, and enjoy your morning, and of course, these tidbits.

1. Tiger Falls in PGA, or did Yang Win?

Before we discuss the overall impact of Y.E. Yang's victory at the PGA Championship on Sunday over Tiger Woods, one thing should be said and understood: Tiger didn't lose Sunday's major, Yang won it.

Twist it how you like, and many will, but that's how the last major of the 2009 season happened. And even to the world's best, it should have happened sooner.

Heading into the PGA Championship this weekend, Tiger was a perfect 14 for 14 in majors won after owning or sharing a piece of the lead, heading into the final 18 holes. Now, the once eye-popping stat reads an impressive 14 of 15 major won.

The last major of the season turned out to be the best of the year, and Tiger didn't even win it. It was a major filled with excellent shot making, unlucky breaks, and suspense. I'm curious to see the overnight ratings on CBS, which will be released Monday morning. I bet it reaches a 7 or 8.

Most of the excellent shot making came from Yang, who on the final hole Sunday, probably hit one of the best approach shots on a final day of a major with the lead in history.
Who hits a 3-wood (excuse me, hybrid 3-wood) from 206 yards, over a tree and a few greenside bunkers, with the tournament on the line, to six feet? Tiger had to even be impressed.

Another impressive shot from Yang's came on 14 when he chipped in for eagle to go up for the first time in the tournament. At the time, this was the shot of the weekend, until the miraculous final approach on 18. These two shots kept the 37-year-old South Korean, and now first time major winner, somewhere not many have been before on Sunday against Tiger: on top of the leaderboard.

While Yang didn't falter like many before him against the world's number one, Woods couldn't seem to drop a putt. Without looking at the video or stat sheets, it's a fair to say Eldrick lipped-out (hit the side of the hole) on six or seven birdie and par putts on Sunday. If two of them fell, we would be talking about Tiger winning his 15th major title. As many golfers know, sometimes you're going to have days where nothing falls. It was just odd seeing miss after miss from one of the best players to ever play the game. For once, Tiger felt a regular golfer's pain on the greens.

In all, the win by Wang will be headline news in South Korea for days to come. CNN-Asia is likely showing around-the-clock coverage of the new champion's whereabouts. And they should.

As the announcers made clear all day Sunday, golf is a booming busniess over in Asia. In a few years, we will be seeing more and more players like Wang, playing on the PGA and winning regularly. One of those players could be Ryo Ishikawa from Japan. Remember that name (if you can pronounce it correctly) because many golf analysts across the pond are already dubbing him as the "Next Tiger."

While it's too early to tell if that prediction will come true, I don't think we'll ever see another Tiger Woods. Despite losing Sunday, I would put a lot of money and my 60* sand wedge on Eldrick surpassing Jack Nicklaus' all-time major of 18. Tiger needs four to pass the Golden Bear.

I'm guessing 2012 will be the year the record is broken. Funny thing is, by that time, Ryo may be the player looking to stop Tiger from achieving this feat. We'll see.

2. Michael Vick signs two year deal with the Eagles

The once dog fighting ringleader is back to leading an offense. It just won't be any time soon.

The former Atlanta Falcon quarterback has agreed in principle to a contract with the NFC runner-up from a year ago. The terms of the contract are two years, with the first year being 1.6 million and the second year adding up to 5.6 million. The second year entitles a team option, meaning the Eagles can release Vick if things go south and not pay a dime for year two. Basically, Vick has to show up, or it's back to the free agent market.

While Vick joining Philly is an interesting partnership, it's hard to see the former Virginia Tech standout taking naps behind center anytime soon. Pro Bowl quarterback and franchise player Donovan McNabb might have something to do with that, but also, it's unlikely Vick is in any type of football shape. When he is able to run a 4.4, 40-yard dash again, the Eagles must find a way to get him involved, even if that means drawing up certain schemes and running unique plays to have him run wild.

I'm curious to see if Philadelphia can design a few plays with McNabb, Vick, Brian Westbrook, Jeremy Maclin, LeShan McCoy and Deshaun Jackson all on the field at the same time. Defensive coordinators would be shaking in their Nike's.

3. IU Basketball recruiting updates

Mike Pegram from Peegs.com gave recent updates about a few visitors that will be making their way to Bloomington in the near future. One of those players is 6-11 center Marshall Plumlee out of Arden, North Carolina. We have discussed Plumlee in the past, but here is his profile from Rivals.com. The Hoosiers sit well with Plumlee at the moment, but don't discount recruiting efforts from Duke, Purdue or Notre Dame. While a long-shot, many Hoosier fans would love to see a Plumlee-Cody Zeller package committment.

Check out Plumlee in action.

The next visitor that will make his way to see Tom Crean and staff is Indianapolis Broad Ripple standout soon-to-be sophomore Ron Patterson. The visit was supposed to take place this past weekend, but it got moved back until this coming weekend. Instead, Patterson will head to Indiana and participate in its Elite camp this weekend, and take a visit around campus.

Internet reports a few months ago stated Patterson was on the verge of an Indiana committment, until more offers arrived at his doorstep soon after. Tennessee, Purdue, Illinois and Ohio State are now heavily in the mix, and it's assumed a few of these schools will get visits. Luckily for the Hoosiers, Patterson has been to Bloomington many times before for home games. We'll keep you updated on this story.

Check out Patterson in action.

5. Purdue Basketball Recruiting

In the last few recruiting cycles, Purdue head coach Matt Painter has cleaned up the best of the best from the state of Indiana. Now, he's taking his recruiting efforts across state lines to Illinois.

Nnana Egwu, listed as a 6-9, 205 pound center out of Chicago, officially picked up a Boilermaker offer earlier this month, adding to an already impressive offer sheet that includes Illinois, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Oregon State.

Egwu was offered a scholarship while on an unofficial visit to West Lafayette this summer. He had this to say to Brian Neubert of BlackandGold.com of the Purude coaching staff.

"I liked the way their campus was put together, how everything was close, and I like their coaching staff. They're nice and they've shown they know how to win. Coach Painter's done a good job building Purdue since he came there."

It's likely the 2011 prospect won't make a decision anytime soon. However, Boilermaker fans should remember Egwu's name, as he is blowing up on the recruiting scene nationwide.

6. Fort Wayne and Surrounding Area High School Football Season Preview

As mentioned in a previous tidbit section, most of my readers live and work in the Fort Wayne area. While high school basketball is still king in these parts, the Summit City loves its football. Who are the favorites to win the SAC, NHC, ACAC and NECC conference titles and make their way to the Dome?

Tom Davis of the Fort Wayne News Sentinel and Glenn Marini of WANE-TV break down the top five area teams coming into this fall.

7. Ramblings

-The Washington Nationals have until midnight tonight to sign number overall pick Stephen Strasburg to a contact. If the two sides fail to reach a deal, the San Diego State phenom will have the option of heading back to college or playing for an Independent League this season. Reports suggests Strasburg and his camp want in the range of 15-20 million dollars a year, which is record money for a rookie. The current rookie contract record was dealt to former Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior for 10 million dollars a year back in 2002. Scott Boras, Stasburg's agent, think his client is a once in a lifetime pitcher, one that deserves top market value.

We'll know by tonight if a deal is reached. Stay tuned!

Thanks for reading. Enjoy the week!

Vick to Philly

Tony Dungy was right again. The man can't tell a lie.

Former Atlanta Falcon and Virginia Tech standout Michael Vick has signed a 2-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to ESPN.com. The two sides came to terms late last night after talks started to heat about this past Monday.

The first year of the contact is worth 1.8 million dollars and the second year is worth 5.2 million. He could also earn another 3 million in incentives if eh reaches certain goals over the next to years. The deal grants the Eagles a team option for the second year, meaning they do not have to resign Vick, and can let him loose.

The final important piece of the contact is that non of this money is guaranteed. That's the big thing to look for in any NFL contract, and Vick gets non of it. Unless, of course, he stays out of trouble and helps the Eagles advance deep into the playoffs.

More reaction to come as this story settles into reality.

Tidbits: Aug. 9

Sorry folks on the delay for this week's (or I guess now, last week's) tidbits. Work and an important wedding were the top priorities for your boy this past week.
But now I'm back, and ready to deliver the important stories that made the airwaves on ESPN, or in print in the Indy Star and Fort Wayne's News Sentinel. It was a delightful week in the world of sports, a week with more quality stories than quantity. Let's get to the recap.

1. Instate shooting guard commits to Crean, Indiana

Tom Crean has said on many occasions that when he recruits, he looks for players who are not only talented, but who want to sincerely play at Indiana. With the commitment of Austin Etherington, he has found both.

Last Tuesday morning, Etherington, out of Hamilton Heights, Indiana, made his college decision in person to Crean on a surprise visit to Bloomington. The 6-6 shooting guard committed to Indiana after much deliberation with his friends, family and high school coaches. In the end, he chose the Hoosiers over offers from Oklahoma State, Xavier and Butler.

As for ranking, Scout.com offers a four-star rating and ranks him as the 12th best shooting guard in the 2011 class. Rivals.com gives the future Hoosier a three-star mark.

Scroll down three stories to see new clips of Etherington in action in Las Vegas.

Here is a scouting report from Mike Pegram of Peegs.com...

Peegs' Scouting Report

You have to start with how good a shooter Etherington can be, especially from the baseline. He is deadly there, or at least was in Las Vegas last week. But what makes him valuable is he is a pure shooter with good size plus he has good bounce off the floor and will fill the lane well in transition. He needs to work on his defense but there are not a lot of other weaknesses. His handle is decent and while he needs to look more for teammates, he showed good progress from April to July in this area. In fact he improved in most every area from April to July as he begins to regain his feel for the game following his knee injury.

2. Indy Linebacker commits to Purdue

Danny Hope may have found a diamond in the rough in Indianapolis linebacker Joe Gilliam.

On August 7, the Southport High School product became the 10th committment in the 2010 class for coach Hope and Boilermakers. In a statement to Kyle Charters of GoldandBlack.com, Gilliam had this to say about Purdue.

"I really connected well with all the coaches, Coach Hope, and my position coach, Coach (Mark) Hagen. It's about an hour and thirty minutes away from my home and that's another factor, and I felt like I could get a good degree there from Purdue."

Listed as a three-star outside linebacker on Rivals.com, Gilliam is ranked as the seventh best prospect in the state of Indiana in 2010. By year's end, he could reach the four-star mark.
He picked the Purdue over a boat-load of offers from programs such as Stanford, Wisconsin, Indiana, Colorado, Nebraska, and Michigan State.

3. Notre Dame lands four-star linebacker

The Irish are dancing like it's 1999 after receiving a commitment from Prince. This may not be the Prince you are thinking of, though.

Prince Shembo, a Rivals.com four-star linebacker out of Charlotte, North Carolina, made his pledge to Notre Dame last Monday evening, becoming the 14th commitment for Irish in the 2010 class. Shembo is listed as a defensive end, but considers himself as a 'hyprid' player (a player who can play multiple positions, in this case defensive end, or linebacker.)

Other than Chris Martin, many recruiting analysts consider Shembo as one of the most important commitments for the Irish in this recruiting cycle.

4. Introducing the "Uro Club" and "Potty Putter"

It's never too early to start thinking about what to give others for Christmas, even in the month of August. Check out these two new popular golf items that would make any golfer happy for years to come.

Uro Club
Potty Putter

5. Dominique Ferguson to Florida International

Yes, you read that correctly.

In a surprising commitment to say the least, former Lawrence North standout and now Hargrave Military Academy senior Dominique Ferguson, who was ranked as one of the top high school players in the state of Indiana in the 2010 class, committed to Isiah Thomas and the Panthers last week over offers from a few big name programs. Purdue and Indiana never pulled the trigger for a number of reasons, including scholarship numbers and on court problems shown by Ferguson, but the likes of Arizona and Kentucky did make a push for the 6-9 power forward.

While a high school player can commit to any college of his choosing, this one is a bit puzzling, considering the lack of success lately from both Thomas and Florida International.

6. Crabtree holds out...for now

It's only a matter of time before San Francisco rookie wide out Michael Crabtree comes to terms with the team over a contract. In the meantime, however, the once Texas Tech great is sure making things difficult for himself and the NFL.

In a statement made by Crabtree's adviser and now infamous cousin, the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft is considering sitting out the 2009 season if they dollar numbers do not match up in ongoing contract negotiations. And if Crabtree does in fact sit out, NFL rules indicate that he can re-enter his name in the 2010 draft.

Crabtree's camp, who includes Eugene Parker, a well-known professional football agent from Fort Wayne, says the receiver is seeking top-three pick money, which is around 40 million dollars in guarantees. The problem, Crabtree wasn't a top-three pick.

While I don't think the 49ers will cave into this demand, it's likely a deal will be made before the season begins.

7 . Ramblings

-David Ortiz has spoken out about the latest allegations that he usd PEDs back in 2003. I want to believe the guy, but sadly nowadays players are proven guilty until innocent. I will hold further judgment on this matter until it's reported on what was found in his system

-With Carlos Zambrano back on the injury list, speculation has grown that Jeff Samardzija will be named named as the fifth man in the Cubs rotation. I hope he has better success as a starter than latest performances coming out of the bullpen.

-In Washington D.C., football is king. Want proof? On Saturday, the city had two of its teams, the Washington Redskins and Washington Nationals, play on the same day. The Redskins hosted a scrimmage, which was open to the public, while the Nationals took on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Looking at attendance numbers, it's clear the Redskins control the city's fanbase.

Redskins (scrimmage): 29,000
Nationals: 24,551

-It's back to Vegas for the last tidbit this week. 'Sin City' has recently released its point spreads for the first week of the college football season. Kickoff isn't for another 27 days, but here are some of the early lines from the important games in week one.

Notre Dame Lands Shembo

Charlie Weis has recruited a Badger, a Shaq and a Fox. Now, you can add Prince to that list.

Prince Shembo, a 6-2, 232 pound, 'hyprid' linebacker out of Charlotte, North Carolina, committed to the Irish Monday afternoon, bringing Notre Dame's 2010 commitment list to 14. He made his pledge known via phone call to Weis and assistant coach Corwin Brown early Monday morning.

Shembo picked the Irish over an offer list that included Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Virginia, Wake Forest, West Virginia, North Carolina and North Carolina State. He also received interest from Florida State and Boston College.

Listed as a weak side linebacker, Shembo will likely stay at that position in college, or even move over to the strong side, due to his pure athleticism and knack for making the big play.

Rivals.com gives the Charlotte Ardrey Kell standout a four-star rating, while Scout.com awards a three-star mark.

Tim Prister of IrishIllustrated.com offers this bit on Shembo:

"Shembo represents himself as a Notre Dame-type young man with athletic upside and versatility. He seems to be the perfect fit for the Sam linebacker position in Jon Tenuta’s 4-3 scheme. At that position and in that scheme, he is a stand-up outside linebacker, but can put a hand on the ground in pass-rush situations, much like current projected starting Sam linebacker Darius Fleming."

Indiana Picks Up 2011 Shooter

College coaches from around the country recruit Indiana players for many reasons, but one reason is well-known: Indiana high school players can shoot the rock. And luckily for Tom Crean, he didn't have to go very far to find an Indiana sharp-shooter.

According to multiple news sources, including Peegs.com, Austin Etherington, out of Hamilton Heights High School in Acardia, Indiana, committed to Tom Crean and the Hoosiers, Monday afternoon while on a visit to the Bloomington.
He joins Matt Carlino, out of Bloomington South, as Indiana commitments for the 2011 class.

Etherington is a 6-6, 185 pound, shooting guard, who averaged 15.7 points and 6.7 rebounds a game in his sophomore season. He also shot an impressive 44 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

He picked to wear the Cream and Crimson over offers from Notre Dame, Butler, New Mexico State, Oklahoma State, and interest from Florida and Ohio State. Many scouting sites had him as a 'prospect on the rise,' after putting together excellent performances on the AAU circuit this past summer.

With two pledges taken in the 2011 class and one in the 2010 class, Crean and staff are going to have to be a little picky from here on out. The 2012 recruiting cycle is when the scholarship numbers will start to look favorable for the Hoosiers.

Friday's Tidbits: July 31

1. Favre is Done

According to ESPN, future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre has announced his retirement from the NFL after 16 years in the business. Favre made his decision Wednesday afternoon after calling Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress, and letting him know his 39-year-old body couldn't take the grind of another NFL season. He will one day enter the Hall of Fame as a Green Bay Packer, despite playing one season Atlanta and one in New York. Favre leaves the NFL with numerous league records and awards, which are listed below for your enjoyment.

Favre's Records and Awards

Most Associated Press NFL MVP Awards - 3 (1995, 1996 and 1997) (tied with Peyton Manning)

Most Consecutive Starts by an NFL QB - 269 (291including playoffs)

Most Regular Season Wins by an NFL QB - 169

Most Touchdown Passes - 464

Most Passing Yards - 65,127

Most Passes Attempted - 9,280

Most Passes Completed - 5,720

Most Seasons, 3,000 or More Yards Passing - 16

Most Passes Had Intercepted - 310

Most Career Games with at Least Three TD Passes - 65

Personally, I think if Favre wanted to play, he could have done fairly well, lining up behind a solid offensive line and handing off to one of the game's best running backs in Adrian Peterson. Still, the decision has been made, and hopefully for the last time.

2. MLB Trade Recap

The Major League trade deadline will come to a close today at 4:00 EST., and unlike last year's last minute shuffle, this year's deadline hasn't been very exciting. Although ESPN has tried to hype up the past week--making Roy Halladay into some sort of pitching god-- only one big trade and a few minor trades have gone down in the past 48 hours.

Here is a list of a few key trades that were made before today's deadline:

-The Cleveland Indians sent pitcher Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco to the Philadelphia Phillies for Class A right-handed pitcher Jason Knapp, Class AAA right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson.

-The Chicago Cubs made a deal late last night with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In the deal, the Cubs received LHPs John Grabow and Tom Gorzelanny, in exchange for RHP Kevin Hart, RHP Jose Ascanio, and 3B Josh Harrison.

-The Chicago White Sox acquired pitcher and former Fort Wayne Wizard Jake Peavy from the San Diego Padres for
Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, and right-handers Dexter Carter and Adam Russell.

-
The Cleveland Indians made another move before Friday's deadline. The Indians send Victor Martinez to the Red Sox, for right-hander Justin Masterson, lefty prospect Nick Hagadone and minor league right-hander Bryan Price.

-
Shortstop Orlando Cabrera has been traded from the Oakland Athletics to the Minnesota Twins. The Twins send minor league infielder Tyler Ladendorf to the A's for Cabrera and cash.

3. Speaking of the Pirates.....

This is an organization that has many people wondering what in the world is going on behind closed doors. In case you missed it, the once proud organization has traded away six of its best and most popular players already this season. This isn't counting last season, where the team sent it's best player in all-star outfielder Jason Bay to the Red Sox for three prospects (one of those prospects was Adam LaRoche, who was traded to the Braves early this season). This got me to thinking, what if the Pirates kept all their best young talent since 2003? What would their lineup have looked like today? Well, after a little research, it appears the Pirates could have been a legitimate playoff contender this season with a roster like this...

2B Jose Castillo
SS Jack Wilson
3B Aramis Ramirez
OF Jason Bay
OF Nate McLouth
OF Xavier Nady
1B Sean Casey
C Jason Kendall

I understand the concept of trading and preparing for the future, but the Pirates have taken it to a whole new level. The rebuilding project has been a non-stop process, and if may never come to an end if they don't pull out the wallet and start investing in their team.

4. Prediction Mill

The Hunch

After a disappointing 2008 season, the Wolverines will improve to 6-6 in 2009, earning a trip to the Alamo Bowl against Arizona State. Freshman quarterback Tate Focier is an upgrade at the QB position, but he will have his work cut out for him.

5. NBA Free Agency

-The Los Angeles Lakers and Lamar Odom finally came to terms Thursday evening, as Odom agreed in principle to a four year, 33 million dollar contract. With the signing of Odom, and newly acquired Ron Artest, it's a safe bet to put the favorite tag on L.A. next season.

-The Portland Trailblazers and one of the league's most underrated point guards, Andre Miller, agreed to a three year, 21 million contract yesterday. With Brandon Roy and the addition of Miller, the Blazers possibly own one of the most feared backcourts in the NBA. Watch out for them next season.

6. Vegas Odds: NFL wins

7. Ramblings

-David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez were the latest two major league baseball players to be named on the now famous '104 player failed drug test report.' Like most people, I'm not surprised either of these guys were on the list. Even though the person who is giving out these names is committing a federal crime, it's only a matter of time before we know everyone on the list.

-Irish football recruiting update.....Notre Dame and Virginia Tech are in hot pursuit of 2010 prospect Prince Shembo. Shembo, a 6-2, 232 pound, linebacker out of Charlotte, North Carolina, visited South Bend back in June, and is making a visit to Blacksburg, Virginia, today. He said he will make a decision sometime in early August. It's too close to call at this point on where he will end up.

-It's still unclear will Michael Vick will eventually end up, now that NFL Commissioner has granted Vick an unconditional reinstatement to the league. Rumors suggest a few teams, such as the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, have shown some interest in acquiring the former Virginia Tech standout. My bet is the Rams make an offer, which Vick will accept. What do they have to lose?

-Jets head coach Rex Ryan announced Friday morning that Kellen Clemens, not first round pick Mark Sanchez, will be the team's starting quarterback for the start of training camp. My guess is Clemens won't make it to week 5.

Favre to Stay Retired

Brett Favre has made a decision. And with it, SportsCenter can now go back to its regular scheduled programming.

ESPN.com is reporting tonight that the all-time career touchdown leader and future Hall of Famer has decided to hang up the cleats and retire from the NFL for a final time (we think), ending months of speculation on a possible return to the Minnesota Vikings.

Vikings head coach Brad Childress said Favre called him earlier this afternoon, stating the reason for his retirement was not wanting to experience the grind of another long, tough season. It would have been Favre's 19th season in the NFL had he decided to come back.

We'll discuss Favre retirement and more this Friday in the Tidbits.

Friday's Tidbits: July 24

It's Friday again, and you know what that means, another edition of this week's tidbits from your boy. Let's get to them, shall we.

1. A Perfect No-No

Chicago White Sox lefty
Mark Buehrle threw the first perfect game of the 2009 season yesterday afternoon in 5-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. The former 38th round draft pick in 1998 out of Jefferson College, needed only 116 pitches and six strikeouts to make history. More importantly, the win moved the White Sox into a first place tie with the stumbling Detroit Tigers.

Other than throwing the first perfect game of the season, Buehrle accomplished a few other historic marks on Thursday. He became the sixth pitcher in history to have thrown at least two career no-hitters, including a perfect game, joining Randy Johnson, Sandy Koufax, Jim Bunning, Addie Joss and Cy Young as the other five to have done so. He also is the 28th pitcher with multiple no-hitters. Both are impressive feats.

While Buehrle deserves the praise for his impeccable day, he might want to send home plate umpire Eric Cooper another thank you card. Why another one? Cooper was the same umpire behind the plate for Buehrle's first no-hitter back on April 18, 2007.

Coincidence? In this case, I say yes.

2. The LeBron Dunk Tape

The Dunk

In case you missed it, the craziest dunk to have ever been performed in our lifetime was released on Wednesday by the tabloid publication TMZ. Well, if you're Nike, you thought it was the craziest dunk of all-time.

In reality, the
Jordan Crawford through the lane dunk, over a late-helping from the weak-side LeBron James tape surfaced after Nike supposedly seized all film of the dunk in efforts to product James' image and its own. But really, all Nike did was leave many, many people confused and mildly disappointed.

The dunk by Crawford was a was a good one, and he did it on camera in front of the NBA's MVP and many at the Nike camp. However, was it good enough for the largest sporting apparel to hide the video from the world? My two-year-old cousin would tell you no, and I would agree him.

Twenty years from now people will remember this whole situation for how it played out, rather than the dunk itself.

I'm a fan Nike and LeBron James, but they really messed up here.

3. MLB Trade Deadline

Major League Baseball's trading deadline is quickly approaching, and for a few teams, this is the time to add the final pieces to the puzzle for a late playoff run. For more teams, though, it's time to dump salaries and prepare for the future.

Here are the two big fish that could end up in a different ponds by next week or sooner....

-Roy Halladay: Many teams have shown interest in the Blue Jays ace, which is a great thing for the trading market. More competition usually leads to better trades.

A day after Toronto said they would accept offers for Halladay, the usual suspects came to the forefront: Yankees, Red Sox, Mets and Dodgers. But recently, the Cardinals and Phillies have stepped into the Halladay sweepstakes, and now these two teams have jumped out in front of the others. Don't discount the Brewers out of this race, either.

The Blue Jays want prospects in return, and not just any prospects, the best ones. This may be hard for teams to do, as many organizations like to hold on to their top young players to build for the future and save money.

UPDATE-Matt Holliday: The St. Louis Cardinals are the winner.

Deal:

Per ESPN: Matt Holliday to St. Louis in exchange for third baseman Brett Wallace, outfielder Shane Peterson and right-handed pitcher Clayton Mortensen, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Cubs note....Look for the Cubbies to make a move for relief pitchers George Sherrill and Chad Qualls.

4. College Football Recruiting Notes

It's tidbit #4, and we haven't discussed recruiting yet?

Take it easy, we have arrived.

Though still months away from National Signing Day, many of the top programs from around the nation continue to improve their future rosters, adding five-star quarterbacks and two-star long snappers. As in every recruiting cycle, there are teams who outperform others off the field. Let's take a look at who's dominating the recruiting circuit right now.

Texas: Everything is bigger in Texas, and their current recruiting class isn't any different. The Longhorns have landed 19 total commitments so far, all of which are from instate. No wonder high school football runs rampant down there. While most teams are scrambling for their first commitment, Texas can sit back and watch the others battle it out, while they continue to look around for quality over quantity. The Longhorns are also still in play for the nation's second best wide receiver, 6-4, 205 pound Darius White. If you haven't guessed it, he's from Fort Worth, Texas.

USC: Robin Hood would not like the USC Trojans. Pete Carroll robs the rich and poor, and remains rich. This is pretty easy accomplish when your team has won a record six BCS bowl games. At the moment, the Trojans own 10 commitments, including pledges from the nation's fourth best running back in Dillion Baxter and top tight end Xavier Grimble. The Trojans also added Jesse Scroggins, the nation's third best pro-style quarterback, just yesterday. With many of the top players in the nation still looking around, most of them have USC on their short list. Look for the rich to become richer by February.

Florida: Urban Meyer has the persona of a top flight businessman. No wonder his business, or Gator program, is the best in the country. It's no coincidence why so many of the top players tend to flock down south to Gainesville, even in the summer. Currently, the Gators have landed 15 commitments, most notably the eighth best prospect in the nation in athlete Matt Elam.

Like Texas and USC, and even Ohio State, Florida has the ability to recruit any player of its choosing, whether it be a three-star safety, or the top overall lineman in the country, like Seantral Henderson. Henderson, a 6-8, 301 pound monster offensive tackle from Saint Paul, Minnesota, recently put Florida, along with USC, Florida State and Michigan on his short.

Commitment Lists of Other Top and Local Programs

Notre Dame
Michigan
Illinois
Purdue
Indiana
Michigan State

5. Top Four College Players to Watch in 2009

I've made a short list of four players who I think should have monster seasons in 2009. Make sure to remember these names. You'll see why this fall.

Jahvid Best, California: Best should rush for over 1,000 yards and score 18 or more touchdowns this season. He's super quick, and hits the hole hard for a smaller running back. He's a home run threat every time he touches the ball.

Highlights

Dez Bryant, Oklahoma State: Many college football fans have heard of him,, but after this season, every college football fan will have heard of him. The 6-2, athletic wide receiver should surpass his 19 touchdown total from last season. He's a future first round draft pick.

Highlights

Jevan Snead, Ole Miss: The once former Texas Longhorn made some noise last season after throwing for 26 touchdowns and 2,762 yards. Back and better than ever, the future NFL signal-caller could throw for over 30 touchdowns and 3,000 yards this fall. Some experts believe Snead could be the first quarterback drafted next year, ahead of Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Tim Tebow and Zac Robinson.

Highlights

Noel Devine, West Virginia: Possibly the quickest running back in the country, Devine will be a one-man show in Morganstown, with Pat White now in the NFL (Go Dolphins!). Since high school, Devine has shown to have an extremely quick first step and make people miss at will. Although he stands 5-8, he will lower the pads and take on bigger defenders. Look for Devine to double his rushing production from last season.

Highlights

Golden Tate, Notre Dame: You really didn't think I would leave a Irish player of the list did you? You can call it bias, but most non-Notre Dame fans would agree that Golden Tate is primed for huge season in South Bend. After reeling in three touchdown passes in the 2009 Hawaii Bowl, the quick, soft hands Tate is ready to take the next step in becoming on the nation's best wide outs. An NFL future is assured, now it's a matter of putting together a good stat sheet. Tate had 10 total touchdowns, along with 1,090 receiving yards last season. If all goes well, look for a 16 touchdown, 1,500 yard season. Remember, he's sharing catches with another future NFL prospect, sophomore Michael Floyd.

7. Rumblings.....

-Tom Crean will have to wait a little longer if he wants a committment from 2012 standout D'Vauntees Smith-Rivera. Rumors swirled last week that Rivera wanted to commit to IU last month, but this was before a few new programs started to show interests, like North Carolina and Duke. Now, Rivera said he's going to wait a little longer before committing, and take more visits.

-Carlos Boozer to the Heat? Very possible, according to multiple sources close to the Heat and Boozer. One such trade suggests Boozer heads to Miami, Odonis Haslam and a first round pick go to Chicago, and the Bulls send Kirk Hinrich and cash to Utah.

-The IPFW men's basketball program recently released its upcoming schedule for the 2009-2010 season, and once again, the Mastodons will take on a number of top-tier, non-conference opponents, such as road games against Wisconsin, Michigan State, Washington State, and Gonzaga.

-Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewsk
i is starting to put together the 2012 U.S. Olympic basketball team, otherwise known as the Redeem Team II. Kobe Bryant said he's coming back, and now, Kevin Durant is ready to make the pledge. Very good start, I'd say. Hopefully, for the Red, White and Blue, others will follow suit.

-Look for a special Brett Favre and Michael Vick tidbit edition sometime in the near future. Both issues need to be discussed at length, and will here very soon.

Friday's Tidbits: July 17

Welcome back ladies and gentlemen to another addition of this week's tidbits. For this issue, I decided to go back to how the tidbits used to be written in the beginning of this site: seven to 10 sports stories in a row, without headlines or subject lines. We'll see how it goes....

TIDBITS

1. All is quiet on the
Indiana Hoosiers basketball recruiting front, at least for now. Tom Crean and his staff continue to make their way across the nation, hoping to land the country's top talent.

Here are a few updates from a few names we've been following....

.....Kyrie Irving says it's an even playing field now in his recruiting. However, I still think IU is the slight leader. Duke and Kentucky continue to put on the heat for his committment.

....Indianapolis Pike star Marquis Teague should commit to Louisville in the next couple of weeks. How good is Teague? One-and-done to the NBA is the likely road he will travel. If he chooses the Hoosiers, something odd happened.

....I'm still waiting for 2012 standout Ron Patterson to commit to Indiana. He has let it known his high interest in Crean and the Hoosiers for sometime. It's only a matter of time....

....Hopefully Jeremy Hollowell, also in the 2012 class, will join Patterson in committing to Indiana, despite picking up a boatload of offers this past week (Illinois, Xavier, Iowa).

2.
Danny Hope and the Purdue Boilermakers may have found their signal-caller of the future after picking up a committment from Sean Robinson. Robinson, a 6-5, 205 pound, dual-threat quarterback out of Rochester, Illinois, became a Boilermaker back on July 6, deciding West Lafayette was the 'best fit for his future.' He chose Purdue over 23 scholarship offers from other top-notch programs, such as Stanford, Syracuse, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska, among others. Robinson becomes the fifth committment for Hope and Purdue in the 2010 class. Rivals.com gives him a three-star rating.

3.
Notre Dame added two more prospects this past week, as the Irish picked up commitments from linebacker Kendall Moore, out of Raleigh, North Carolina, and cornerback Spencer Boyd, from Cape Coral, Florida .

After Moore participated in Notre Dame's summer camp last month, he decided to call Charlie Weis and give his pledge to the Irish on Tuesday. He turned down offers from ACC and Big East schools, such as North Carolina State and Florida State, who went hard after the physical linebacker. Moore is regarded as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com.

Boyd, committed to the Irish early this morning (7/17), picking Notre Dame after a long recruiting circus that saw more teams jump in for his committment as he continued to impress in summer camps. He chose the Irish over offers from Georgia, Miami, Michigan, and North Carolina. Rivals.com rates Boyd as a three-star prospect.

4. Look out now, but here come the Cubs. By winning three out of their last four games, beginning before the All-Star break, the Northsiders are starting to show signs of life offensively. It's amazing it took this long, but some players are beginning to earn their paychecks, some more than others. Despite his antics, former All-Star
Milton Bradley has raised his batting average 10 points in the last a few weeks, after working with new Cubs hitting coach Von Joshua. Let's see if he continues to improve in the second half. While Bradley has been slowly turning his season around, Derrek Lee has been a man on a mission. I think he heard the trade rumors a few weeks back, and realized he needed to get things going at the plate. Currently, the first baseman has 18 home runs and 58 RBIs, and owns a .287 batting average. The Cubs are now three games back in a hotly contested N.L. Central.

5. Since we're talking about baseball, I'd like to make my 2009 playoff predictions, although many things can happen between now and October. Let's take a chance at these...

A.L. Division Winners: Yankees, Tigers, Angels---Wild Card: Red Sox
N.L. Division Winners: Phillies, Cubs, Dodgers---Wild Card: Marlins

World Series Match Up: Phillies vs. Yankees

Editors note: I can't remember the last time I made correct playoff predictions for baseball. This could be a different year, though, for your boy!

6. Bishop Luers'
Deshuan Thomas and South Side's Raphael Davis are the most well-known high school basketball players in the Summit City, and both will attend Big Ten schools in the coming years. But is there enough room for two most players to join in their elite status?

From multiple AAU scouting reports,
Brent and Byson Scott, who will both attend Northrop High School as freshmen in the fall, have competed and done very well against many AAU teams this summer. I've been told both stand about 6-0 in height, and play the combo guard position (point guard-shooting guard). Due to impressive performances at various camps and AAU tournaments, the twins are starting to pick up interest from big time programs, such as Indiana, Purdue, etc. The Scotts attended Indiana's Midnight Madness last season, as well as competed at Tom Crean's Summer Camp a few weeks ago. While it's still early to determine how good these guys will end up, look for them this winter to make some noise, and help Northrop become relevant again in Fort Wayne high school basketball.

7. Ramblings...

....
Lamar Odom is being awfully greedy right now in contract negotiations with the Los Angeles Lakers. He is seeking a five year, 50 million dollar contract, but L.A. recently made a three year, 27 million dollar offer. Of course, Odom turned down the offer, and is looking elsewhere. So much for a guy who said just a month ago that he wanted to win another championship, and would take a pay cut to do so.

.....Is
Tiger Woods really going to miss the cut at the British Open? Bye-bye high ratings this weekend for ABC.

....
Dwyane Wade has taken his shoe empire to Nike, leaving Converse after a five year stint. Good move on his part. Now he can attend Nike athlete appreciation parties with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.

...Brett Favre has until July 30 to make a decision on whether or not he will play for the Vikings next season. All I can say is, it's about time.

Have a great weekend!
